Morehouse Junior High Helping Students Reach for the Stars A new “Math Academy” for the top 6th grade math students will let students achieve far beyond their peers Bastrop, LA; August 27, 2012: A new concept in education has come to Morehouse Junior High School with the addition of a Math Academy class. On Thursday night, August 23rd, a group of students, parents, and educators gathered at MJH with the purpose of introducing a new concept in classroom math education that involves using the computer as the primary source of instruction and then depends on the classroom teacher to monitor and mentor students when they come to an area of mathematics where they may struggle. Known as the Khan Academy (MJH has chosen the name “The Morehouse Junior High Math Academy”), this web-based program offers a “FREE WORLD CLASS EDUCATION TO ANYONE”. The Khan program began as one man attempted to offer You-Tube videos to help tutor a cousin in another city and became overwhelmed with the response from strangers all over the world. The successes in other schools around the country has prompted MJH to begin this pilot program to see just how far a motivated student can climb in this first year of offering a class of this sort. Each student in this new class was hand selected based on their i-LEAP scores from their 5th grade year. What is truly unique about this new class is that they will be using a computer based learning program that is geared to allow them to grow well beyond the 6th grade curriculum. The students will, after completing the required modules for a particular grading period, be able to move at their own learning pace to any level of math they wish. The program offers instructionin math from basic addition through Advanced Calculus. The teacher in the class will track each student and will work one-on-one with any student who runs into a “bump in the road”. Meanwhile, all of the other students will be working on different modules at their own pace and based on their own curiosity or weaknesses. The teacher in the course said that he is expecting this class of students to move from Basic to Mastery or from Mastery to Advanced by the time the i-LEAP tests are given again in April of 2013 and that if this occurs the program could be expanded in the next school year. The MJH principal, Mr. Rene’ Fonte, said that it would be possible, assuming success is shown, that the initial students in this class would be allowed to continue in the Math Academy throughout their junior high school careers. |
